It can feel like everyone received instructions you somehow missed
Someone is getting married. Someone bought a house. Someone seems completely certain about their career.
Meanwhile, you might be changing jobs, questioning a relationship, living with family, or trying to work out what you actually want.
Maybe your life looks fine from the outside, but inside you keep returning to the same thought:
I should be further along by now.
At Inner Bloom Counseling, Rylee offers online counseling for young adults in Colorado who want support navigating uncertainty, relationships, identity, and the pressure to have everything figured out.
You do not need a complete life plan before you begin.
What does “behind” actually mean?
Before accepting the idea that you are behind, it may help to ask:
Behind whose timeline?
A family expectation? A friend’s life? A version of adulthood you imagined when you were younger?
There may be things you genuinely want to change. There may also be expectations you have been carrying without deciding whether they belong to you.
Both deserve attention.
You can want growth without treating your current life as evidence of failure.
Your circumstances are part of the picture
The choices available to you may be shaped by finances, housing, health, family responsibilities, education, or access to support.
Those details matter.
It would be unfair to compare your decisions with someone else’s while ignoring the circumstances surrounding them.
Therapy is not about convincing you that difficult realities do not exist. It can be a place to examine what is within your control, what requires support, and what you do not need to blame yourself for.
You do not have to transform every obstacle into a lesson before you are allowed to find it difficult.
You can explore without making a permanent decision
Perhaps you are questioning your career.
Perhaps a friendship no longer feels mutual.
Perhaps you are learning that being agreeable and being comfortable are not the same thing.
You can bring uncertainty into counseling without committing to a dramatic change.
We can explore questions such as:
What feels important to me?
What am I doing because I want to—and what am I doing because I am afraid to disappoint someone?
Which relationships allow me to be honest?
What would a realistic next step look like?
You remain the person making decisions about your life.
Therapy does not require a perfectly organized problem
You might begin with anxiety, relationship stress, or feeling disconnected from yourself.
You might also begin with, “I don’t know. Something just feels off.”
Therapy can help people examine distressing patterns, strengthen coping and communication, and work toward goals connected to everyday functioning. A preliminary conversation is also a chance to ask about the therapist’s approach and whether it feels like a useful fit. National Institute of Mental Health
You do not need to know the name of a diagnosis or a therapy method to start that conversation.
When is it worth reaching out?
Pay attention to how you are functioning, not only how your life looks.
Persistent distress, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep, loss of interest, or trouble completing everyday tasks are reasons to talk with a health care professional. You do not need to wait for every part of life to fall apart. National Institute of Mental Health
A helpful starting question is:
What has become harder to carry on my own?
That might be a feeling, a pattern, a decision, or the constant pressure to appear okay.
