Starting Therapy as a College Student in Colorado: What to Know

By Rylee Wisniewski · Inner Bloom Counseling

You don’t have to wait until the semester falls apart

College can bring questions you did not expect to be answering all at once.

Who are my people? Is this the right major? How do I handle being away from home? Why does everyone else seem more confident?

Maybe you are balancing classes and work. Maybe you commute, live with family, or have responsibilities that do not disappear when the semester begins.

At Inner Bloom Counseling, Rylee offers virtual counseling for young adults located in Colorado.

Here is what to consider when exploring whether online therapy could fit your life.

Start with what you want help with—not the perfect explanation

You can ask for support with a specific concern, such as anxiety or relationship stress.

You can also start with something less defined:

“I feel overwhelmed.”

“I’m having a hard time adjusting.”

“I keep second-guessing everything.”

During a consultation, you can discuss your concerns, ask questions, and learn about the next steps. You are not expected to summarize your entire life or arrive with a diagnosis.

Think about where you will actually have sessions

Online counseling can take place without traveling to a therapist’s office, but privacy still matters.

A shared dorm room, open study area, or busy coffee shop may make it difficult to speak freely. Look for a private space where other people cannot hear the conversation. Headphones help protect what you hear; they do not silence your side of the session. Use a personal device and a secure connection where possible. HHS.gov

Discuss obstacles before scheduling. An appointment should not depend on hoping your roommate happens to be gone.

Ask what confidentiality means in practice

Before beginning, ask how your information is protected and what the limits of confidentiality are.

You can also ask how reminders, portal messages, and billing communications are sent. For students using a family insurance plan, it is worth asking the insurer what information may appear in insurance statements.

These are reasonable questions. You do not need to feel embarrassed about wanting to understand who may receive information.

Plan ahead for breaks and travel

Your location during the appointment matters.

A Colorado address or enrollment at a Colorado college does not automatically allow sessions while you are visiting another state. Telehealth professionals must have the appropriate authorization for the place where the client is physically located during care. telehealth.hhs.gov

Tell Rylee about planned travel, moving, or studying out of state before those changes occur. Together, you can discuss whether sessions can continue and what alternatives may be needed.

Get clear about costs before the first therapy session

Ask about your specific insurance plan, potential out-of-pocket costs, cancellation expectations, and any private-pay arrangements.

Inner Bloom and Illuminate are separate businesses with a contracting relationship. For services arranged through that contract, scheduling or billing may involve Illuminate. Your intake information should explain which practice is administering your care.

The goal is clarity before you commit—not surprising financial details afterward.

Make room for therapy without making it another class to pass

You do not have to perform insight.

You do not need a dramatic update every week.

Some sessions may involve exploring a difficult pattern. Others may focus on a decision, relationship, or what has felt heavy lately.

It is okay to say you do not understand a question. It is okay to discuss whether an approach is helping. Your preferences and experience belong in the conversation.

Getting started with Rylee

Schedule a consultation to discuss your needs and availability. After confirming clinical fit, completing the required paperwork, and verifying insurance or payment arrangements, your first therapy appointment can be scheduled.

You do not have to navigate this stage of life without support.
