You are more than the person keeping everything together
When someone asks how you are doing, you might answer with an update about your children.
Their school. Their sleep. Their appointments. Their latest challenge.
But what about you?
Not how the household is functioning. Not whether everyone made it where they needed to go.
How are you feeling inside your own life?
At Inner Bloom Counseling, therapy for mothers is not limited to discussing how to manage children’s behavior. It is also a place to explore your experiences, relationships, needs, and identity.
You matter outside of what you provide for other people.
Individual therapy and parenting support are not the same conversation
Parenting guidance may focus on routines, communication with children, or responding to particular behaviors.
Individual therapy creates room for another set of questions:
Why is it so hard for me to ask for help?
What happens when someone is disappointed in me?
Why do I feel responsible for keeping everyone happy?
What parts of myself have I stopped making room for?
Counseling may address stress, relationship difficulties, troubling thoughts, and emotional concerns. Your goals can include motherhood without making every conversation about becoming a better parent. National Institute of Mental Health
Sometimes the most important topic is not what your child needs.
It is what you need.
There is room for the identity questions
Maybe you used to know what you enjoyed.
Now, when someone asks what you would do with an afternoon to yourself, your first thought is catching up on chores.
Perhaps your priorities have changed. Perhaps you miss something about your earlier life but feel guilty admitting it. Perhaps you are discovering interests that have nothing to do with who you used to be.
You do not need to “get your old self back” to deserve support.
We can explore who you are now—and what you want to make room for next.
That might mean reconnecting with friendships, considering a career change, exploring values, or identifying what feels meaningful beyond meeting everyone else’s expectations.
Boundaries can become part of the conversation
A boundary might sound simple on paper:
“I cannot take that on this week.”
In real life, saying it may bring up guilt, fear, or concern about how someone will respond.
In therapy, we can explore those reactions rather than simply handing you a sentence and telling you to use it.
What are you afraid might happen?
Which responsibilities are genuinely yours?
What do you need to communicate?
What support would make a change more realistic?
The goal is not to stop caring. It is to consider how you can care without disappearing from your own life.
Not everything can be solved with self-care
A relaxing bath cannot create affordable childcare. A breathing exercise cannot redistribute household responsibilities by itself.
Parents may need practical, financial, workplace, and community support alongside individual care. The Surgeon General’s parental well-being advisory explicitly calls for support beyond individual coping strategies. HHS.gov
Therapy should leave room for those realities.
We can explore your emotional experience without treating every difficult circumstance as something you should learn to tolerate better.
You don’t have to justify every feeling
Try finishing this sentence:
“Something I wish I could say without immediately explaining why I should be grateful is…”
You do not have to share the answer publicly or turn it into a decision today.
It may simply help you notice a conversation you have been needing.
Your feelings deserve thoughtful attention, even when they are complicated.
